Recovery of off-grid solar market needs more government support – report

The solar lighting products market appears to be recovering from the effects of COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, with some segments of the off-grid solar market back on an overall upward trajectory.

Data from the second half of 2021 (July to December) shows that GOGLA affiliates sold almost four million solar lighting products.

The recovery is uneven though, with disparities between markets and products quite pronounced. For example, key appliances sales actually decreased 20% versus the first half of the year, strongly driven by a drop in fan sales.

The global association for the off-grid solar industry GOGLA, Efficiency for Access, with support from the World Bank Group’s Lighting Global Program, published its latest semi-annual Global Off-Grid Solar Market Report.

The sales of PAYGo products reached a record high of more than 1.5 million units in the last six months of 2021. This was driven by the sales of PAYGo solar lanterns which are the most affordable line of products in the off-grid range.
