Solar home system,metering

Johannesburg’s electricity utility City Power has gone on the offensive against what it says is misinformation being spread and circulated by councillors regarding the management of customers’ solar installations and pre-paid meters.

It said a notice doing the rounds makes a number of false claims including that City Power will not install meters for customers who already have a solar system.

Additionally, the notice claims that the entity will cut off supply and impose a R30,000 ($1,707.65 at today’s exchange rate) fee if customers purchase electricity units in large amounts.

“City Power would like to put it on record that this is untrue and we are calling for those who are spreading these lies to desist.”

As a part of a move towards promoting renewable energy, City Power said it has streamlined the process for the Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) application, designed to facilitate the installation of solar home systems for its customers.
