Government clarifies use of solar powered lamps in Lake Victoria

According to the director of fisheries at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Emmanuel Bulayi, the government hasn’t banned the use of the solar lamps but it emphasizes the fishermen to adhere to set laws and regulations when conducting their activities.

He clarified that the government through the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) conducted a study on all solar lamps used for fishing, including those that are run by motorcycle batteries and those that use kerosene and then recommended solar lamps as the best lights that should be used in fishing.

“We then approved that fishermen should use solar lamps in their boat that do not exceed 90 watts which means that each lamp should not exceed 10 watts, this is where fishermen should be very careful and stop violating the set rules and regulations,” he explained.
