Off-grid smart subsidy launched

To encourage private sector participation in the provision of renewable energy in remote places, a programme dubbed, Off-Grid Rural Electrification Smart Subsidy (OG-RESS) has been launched.

The programme, supported by the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) and World Bank, seeks to deploy over 15,000 solar home systems and solar mini-grids as part of REA’s 2021 work plan.

This was revealed yesterday when REA and Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

REA chief executive officer Clement Silavwe said solar energy remains one of the key technologies the authority will continue to use to increase access to electricity services in rural Zambia.
