Leading up to ESI Africa’s media presence at the Africa Energy Forum in Nairobi, Kenya, the interview explores the state of Kenya’s energy access and energy system, and unpacks the governmental intervention needed to support the country’s transmission and distribution utility, Kenya Power.

Kenya’s top targets for electrification In the short to medium term, Kenya hopes to match its energy demand and supply gap, Wachira explained. At an approximate 78% connectivity rate, Wachira says Kenya is targets a 100% electricity access by the year 2030.

However, Wachira is confident that universal electricity access can be achieved by the year 2028. In order to reach this goal, Kenya’s energy department is focused on accelerating the country’s Last Mile Connectivity Project which is meant to improve access to electricity in the country’s rural areas.
